At the last European Mars Societies congress, Robert Zubrin expressed the opinion that the Starship’s descent to the Martian surface could pose a problem for the first crewed missions. The reason put forward is the amount of propellant that would be needed to be produced and stored on Mars during the stay (18 months, unavoidable). He suggested leaving the Starship in Martian orbit and using a shuttle to descend to the surface. I propose a solution that would consist of launching simultaneously a Starship and a Falcon Heavy from Earth , linking them in flight with tethers, putting the system into rotation, and then landing only the Falcon Heavy on Mars while keeping the Starship in orbit for the return to Earth. Advantages: gravity during the journey, and a reduced need for propellant produced on Mars.
