Stopping at the L1 Lagrange point of the Earth-Moon system at the end of a Mars-Earth journey would be an extremely useful stopover
The dangers of returning to Earth after a Mars mission are well known. They concern both the astronauts and the people on Earth. The main difficulties lie in the aerocapture and then docking but they can be overcome.
