The low gravity of the moon Deimos would be very suitable for the construction of a rotating space station intended to be positioned in geostationary orbit around Mars. This is where it would be easiest to assemble the masses of the necessary modules, and overall to encase the torus-habitat in a very massive regolith shell to protect it from radiation.
La faible gravité de la lune Deimos, serait très propice à la réalisation d’une station spatiale rotative destinée à être positionnée en orbite géostationnaire de la planète Mars. C’est là où l’on pourrait le plus facilement assembler les masses des modules nécessaires, et surtout pour entourer le tore-habitat d’une coque de régolithe très massive pour le protéger des radiations.
This week I’ll talk about the flight of Eagle One, the first free-rotating space station, launched from the dust of Mars to its chosen areostationary orbital site. From there, humans will be able to work on the ground of Mars, just as they work remotely anywhere on Earth. This will be the beginning of the colonization of Mars.
Cette semaine je vous parle de l’envol d’Eagle One, la première station spatiale rotative libre en orbite, depuis la poussière de Mars jusqu’au site choisi en orbite aréostationnaire. De là, les hommes pourront agir au sol de Mars, comme sur Terre ils agissent n’importe où par télétravail. Ce sera le début de la colonisation du monde martien.
Despite the challenges of living and working on them, Mars’ moons are preferable to the planet’s surface. Indeed, on those moons, one can choose one’s gravity and use them as a base for navigating near-Mars space or toward Earth, without having each time to descend to the bottom of the planet’s gravitational well and then ascend again. The ultimate goal, of course, is to eventually live in the planet’s areostationary orbit while exploiting the ground resources.
Malgré les difficultés que présentent les conditions de vie et de travail sur elles, les lunes de Mars sont des endroits qu’il faut préférer à la surface de la planète. En effet on pourra y choisir sa gravité et s’en servir de base pour évoluer dans l’espace proche de Mars ou vers la Terre, sans avoir, à chaque fois, à descendre au fond du puits de gravité de la planète et à en remonter. La perspective est bien entendu de vivre ensuite sur l’orbite aréostationnaire de la planète tout en en exploitant les ressources du sol.
