Mars, a mission to explore the pits and caverns of Cerberus Fossae?

Pascal Lee, a researcher at the SETI Institute, has just published a report on the work carried out under his supervision by one of his students on a project exploring the pits and caverns in the Cerberus Fossae region, near the Cerberus Tholus 1 (CT1) volcano. This region is of interest due to its recent volcanic and tectonic activity. The exploration tool is NASA’s Mars Chopper, a multicopter with a promising future.

Mars, une mission pour explorer les puits et cavernes de Cerberus Fossae ?

Pascal Lee, chercheur auprès de l’institut SETI, vient de publier une note sur les travaux effectués sous sa direction par un de ses étudiants sur un projet d’exploration des puits et cavernes du massif volcanique de Cerberus Tholus 1 (CT1), dans la région de Cerberus Fossae. Cette région est intéressante en raison de son activité volcanique et tectonique récente. L’outil d’exploration est le Mars Chopper de la NASA, un multicoptère appelé à un bel avenir.

Living in the Martian Environment? Methodology of the Approach

It has been observed that at the 0g level (ISS), the risk of living in weightlessness is unacceptable in the long term due to SANS syndrome (Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome). Does this mean we should give up the idea of physically going to Mars, where gravity is not zero but weak? To answer this question, we need to study precisely (1) the effects of a 0.38g gravity and (2) build two rotating space stations.

Vivre dans l’environnement martien ? Méthodologie de l’approche

On a constaté qu’au niveau zéro g (ISS) le risque de vivre en apesanteur n’était pas acceptable sur le long terme, en raison du syndrome SANS (Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome). Faut-il pour autant renoncer à aller physiquement sur Mars où la gravité n’est pas nulle mais faible ? Pour répondre à la question il faut étudier précisément (1) les effets d’une gravité à 0,38g et (2) construire deux stations spatiales rotatives.

The problem of Gravity on Mars. The reality, which we must face, is that a stay will be possible for one synodic period (18 months on site) and perhaps two (44 months on site – i.e., 18 + 26), but that, within the current technological framework, it will probably be impossible for an unlimited duration due to fundamental physiological properties of the human body. I do, however, open the door for a solution.

Pour vivre sur Mars, la faiblesse du gradient hydrostatique interne résultant d’une gravité de 0,38 g posera problème

Problème de la gravité pendant le séjour sur Mars. La réalité, qu’il faut bien regarder en face, est que ce séjour sera possible pour une période synodique (18 mois sur place) et peut-être deux (44 mois sur place – soit 18 + 26), mais que, dans le cadre technologique actuel, il sera probablement impossible pour une durée illimitée en raison de propriétés physiologiques fondamentales du corps humain. Je laisse cependant entrevoir une solution.

First inhabited Mission to Mars: Gravity implies a Stopover at L1 Before Returning to Earth

When I presented the study that I went through with the help of claude.ai on the subject of an inhabited mission to Mars returning to Earth, I didn’t fully develop the constraints of such mission and their consequences. Today I’m doing so with a very important one, namely “gravity”. It is important for a better understanding of the necessity of a stopover at an orbital station around the L1 Lagrange point of the Earth-Moon system.

Première mission habitée vers Mars : La gravité impose une escale au point de Lagrange L1 avant le retour sur Terre

Lors de ma présentation de l’étude réalisée avec l’aide de claude.ai sur une mission habitée vers Mars et son retour sur Terre, je n’ai pas traité « à fond » toutes les contraintes d’une telle mission et leurs conséquences. Aujourd’hui, je le fais pour une contrainte essentielle : la gravité. Elle est cruciale pour comprendre la nécessité d’une escale dans une station orbitale autour du point de Lagrange L1 du système Terre-Lune.

Artemis II, a success with a bitter taste

The astronauts of the Artemis II mission have touched down on the sea off the coast of California. They are in good condition and the landing went smoothly. However, I haven’t been able to get excited about this mission. I can only see it as a « remake, » a testament to the refusal of political leaders to continue our journey to the stars as we hoped in 1968!

Artemis II, un succès au goût d’amertume

Les astronautes de la mission Artemis ont touché la surface de la mer au large de la Californie. Ils sont en bonnes conditions et l’atterrissage s’est bien passé. Cependant je ne suis pas parvenu pas à me passionner pour cette mission. Je ne peux la voir que comme un « remake », témoignant du refus des dirigeants politiques d’avoir voulu poursuivre notre chemin vers les étoiles comme on l’espérait en 1968!
